The Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier du Canada (CIF/IFC) is one of Canada’s oldest and most respected forest conservation organizations. CIF/IFC members work in government, industry, and academia, and include foresters, technicians, biologists, ecologists, educators, economists and many individuals with an interest and passion for our forests and the complex ecosystems that they support. Our members are dedicated to sound forest stewardship and sustainability across Canada and throughout the world. The CIF/IFC is a vibrant and modern national network for all types of forest professionals; communicating and facilitating the application of new or improved forest science into practice, strongly promoting continuing education and professional development opportunities, and advocating for long-term wise use of forest resources for the many ecological, social and economic benefits that forests and trees provide. Forest professionals ensure public and private landowner forest objectives are met and are involved in the development of forest policy at national, provincial and local scales.

The Forest Genetics Council of BC (FGC) is a multi-stakeholder group representing the forest industry, Ministry of Forests and Range, Canadian Forest Service, universities, and small tenure holders. The council is appointed by the provincial Chief Forester and has a mandate to champion genetic resource management (GRM) in BC, to oversee strategic and business planning, and to advise BC’s chief forester on GRM policies.

GRM activities include tree improvement (select seed production in orchards, tree breeding), activities to maintain and enhance forest resilience (climate-based seed transfer; selecting for health and pest resistance), and genetic conservation (seed banks; cataloguing conservation gaps).

The FGC owns SelectSeed Ltd. A compsany that, on behalf of Council, has invested in needed seed orchards. SelectSeed Ltd. orchards are now producing substantial amounts of high-genetic-gain seed that is available for reforestation in most interior lodgepole pine seed zones, as well as some interior Douglas-fir and spruce zones.

For information on the Forest Genetics Council, SelectSeed Ltd. or on seed availability, please contact Jack Woods at 250-715-6285 or jwoods.fgc@shaw.ca.
